Typical situations

Settling in. You’ve just moved to Zurich, Munich or Vienna. The flat viewing, the handover with the landlord, the question about the laundry room rota, the chat with the caretaker: the phone lies on the table and both of you read and hear the translation. That’s the face-to-face conversation, with no app to install.

Offices, doctors and banks. Registering at the residents’ office, the reception at the doctor’s, the questions about your health insurance or bank account. Situations where a misunderstood detail causes trouble later, and your German isn’t quite there yet.

Work in an international team. Your team works in English, but the clients speak German. Or the weekly call is with a supplier in Stuttgart. In Zoom, Teams or Google Meet, you speak English and they hear German; you read what they reply as subtitles. That’s Dolmi’s live translator for video calls. If your German is good enough to answer yourself, the subtitles alone may be all you need.

School and nursery. The parents’ evening, the talk with the nursery teacher, signing up at the football club: short conversations nobody books an interpreter for.

Family. Your partner’s parents speak German and little English. At Sunday lunch, the phone lies on the table; on the video call with the grandparents, you read their German as English subtitles.

Voice messages and recordings. The voice message from your landlord, the recorded talk from work, the video your colleague sent: upload the file and get the translation as an MP3, as text and as SRT subtitles. It’s the simplest way to translate German audio into English, and it works the other way round too.

Good to know

• In a face-to-face conversation, whoever wants to talk taps their half of the screen first: you tap “I’ll speak”, the other person “Ich spreche”. In a call, you choose your language and the language of the others, and the way you choose sets the direction: subtitles translate into your language, the voice into the language of the others.
• For German ↔ English, Google Meet has a built-in alternative: Meet’s speech translation translates between English and German, in a voice similar to your own. It’s included in Google AI Pro and Ultra and in Google Workspace from Business Standard, and it only works in Meet. If you have one of these subscriptions and only call through Meet, you don’t need Dolmi for that. Dolmi helps in Zoom, Teams and other apps, at the table and with files. • An AI does the translating. For contracts, court documents or official papers, you need a certified translation by a person.
• For medical consultations with a diagnosis, or appointments with legal consequences, a professional interpreter is still the safer choice.
